Spring Fling April 28, 2009 On Tuesday, April 28, 2009, we hope that everyone can find his or her way to Camp Lake Stephens just outside of Oxford. On that day, Camp Lake Stephens is sponsoring our annual “Spring Fling.” This day is designed for adults of all ages, especially our retirees. It will be a day of seeing old friends that you haven’t seen in years (or the last seasonal fling at Camp Lake Stephens!) and making new friendships that will last for years to come. It will be a day of fun, learning, and entertainment as we experience new activities and devotions. It will also be a day of spiritual renewal as we gather in the midst of God’s beautiful creation! The entertainment this year will be Gus Shelley, pastor of Grenada First United Methodist. He is known throughout the area for his well-honed humor and original characters. Once famous for his “church lady” join Gus as he introduces you to “Uncle Willy,” an old man who likes to tell jokes and who also has a few stories to tell. Registration will be from 8:30-9:30 AM, and the entertainment will end at 2:00 PM. WORHSHOPS: Cake Decorating (Linda Fleming): Learn how to decorate beautiful cakes from Linda Fleming, co-owner of Emileigh’s Bakery and Catering, one of Oxford’s most beloved bakeries. Linda will demonstrate her skills in cake decorating and teach you how to decorate beautifully at home. Parables from Nature (Rev. Ed Woodall): Rev. Woodall, a retired United Methodist Minister and former director at Camp Lake Stephens, will explore the parables of Jesus that are rooted in nature. Come learn how Jesus used creation to teach the early believers about faith and Christian living. Gardening (Don Giles): Let Oxford’s finest certified Master Gardener teach you a thing or two about some spring and summer planting. Be ready to get your hands dirty (and then wash them before lunch!). A Walk in the Woods (Max Billingsley): Join Max, a lifelong dendrologist, as he guides you on an ecological tour of part of Camp Lake Stephens. Learn some key tree identifications, and the value of certain trees that you might have on your own property. Abraham and the City of Ur (Rev. Jim Petermann): Join Rev. Petermann as he takes you on a visual and Biblical tour of the city of Ur and Genesis Chapter 12. Be ready to see the fullness of this part of the Holy Land, where Jim has recently returned after a long stay, complete with stories and pictures! It’s God’s Season: Will there be fruit? (Rev. Deborah Palmer): Rev. Palmer, of Burns United Methodist Church in Oxford, MS, will guide you on a Bible study of Luke 13:1-9. The cost of the day is $20, which includes the cost of lunch and all programming related expenses. To register, please call the camp office or send your check along with your three workshop choices to the camp office. |
